Power outages and staying informed.

Grid Power is out! Where can I learn more?

Power outages can be disruptive, and knowing the status of an outage can help you plan and respond effectively. Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) provides a useful online tool that allows you to check for outages in your area. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to use the PG&E website to find and monitor outages.

Step 1: Go to the PG&E Outage Center

Start by navigating to the PG&E website. To directly access the outage page , use the following link:  PG&E Outage Center - View Outage Map (pge.com) . This will take you to PG&E’s dedicated Outage Center, which provides real-time information on current outages, planned outages, and restoration updates.

Step 2: Check for Current Outages

Once on the Outage Center page, you’ll notice a section labeled “Outage Map.” This interactive tool displays active outages across the entire PG&E service area. You can zoom in or out to get a more detailed or broad view of outages.

To check for outages near your location:

  1. Enter Your Address: Use the search bar at the top left corner of the map to input your address or city.
  2. View Outages Nearby: The map will then zoom into your location, showing any current outages in your vicinity. Each outage is represented by an icon that provides details when clicked.

Step 3: Understand the Outage Information

When you click on an outage icon on the map, a box will pop up providing key details about the outage, including:

  • Number of affected customers: This shows how many homes and businesses are impacted.
  • Estimated time of restoration: PG&E provides an estimate of when power is expected to be restored.
  • Cause of the outage: In some cases, the reason for the outage, such as weather or equipment issues, is listed.
  • Start time: This indicates when the outage began.

Step 4: Sign Up for Alerts

PG&E allows you to sign up for outage alerts, which can provide updates via email, text, or phone call. This is particularly useful if there is an ongoing outage in your area. To sign up:

  • Scroll to the “Sign Up for Alerts” section.
  • Enter your contact information and preferences for how you would like to receive updates. This ensures you stay informed even if you're away from home or unable to check the website frequently.

Step 5: Planned Outages and Maintenance

In addition to real-time outages, PG&E schedules planned outages for maintenance and upgrades. You can check for these planned outages on the same outage map by selecting the “Planned Outages” filter. If your area is affected by planned maintenance, you’ll typically receive advance notice from PG&E, but you can double-check the details online.

Step 6: Report an Outage

If you're experiencing a power outage but it’s not showing up on the map, you can report the outage to PG&E. On the Outage Center page, look for the "Report an Outage" button. You’ll need to provide your address and a few details about the situation. PG&E will then investigate and update the map if necessary.

Additional Features

  • Safety Tips: PG&E also provides important safety information for dealing with power outages, such as how to use generators safely, what to do in the event of downed power lines, and how to prepare for prolonged outages.
  • Mobile Access: If you’re on the go, you can access the outage map and other features using the PG&E mobile app, available for iOS and Android. This offers the same functionalities as the website and allows you to stay informed while away from home.
